Peter J. Bernard to Lead Integrated Health System for Bon Secours in Virginia; Richard A. Hanson Appointed Sr. Vice President, Performance Management for Bon Secours Health System, Inc.

Marriottsville, Maryland, July 9, 2008 -- Bon Secours Health System, Inc. (BSHSI) announced today its plan to create the first faith-based statewide Integrated Health Care Delivery Network in Virginia. Reflecting the success of BSHSI across the Commonwealth of Virginia, this model of organization will be a national example for Catholic health care.

Beginning August 4, Peter J. Bernard will assume the leadership of Bon Secours Health System in Virginia which will include Bon Secours Richmond Health System and Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System. Bernard will continue to report to Donald E. Strange, BSHSI’s chief operating officer, and will serve as a member of the national health system’s executive management team.

Concurrently, Richard A. Hanson is promoted to senior vice president of performance management at BSHSI. This key system-wide position will proactively respond to the continued pressure of rising health care costs coupled with declining reimbursements and a less than ideal national economy. Hanson’s new responsibility as executive leader of internal consulting resources is intended to support improvements in the clinical and financial performance of BSHSI as a whole. The multi-year target is the elimination of redundant costs and the creation of a culture of efficiency across the System. Hanson has provided 12 years of leadership for Bon Secours in Hampton Roads and has helped to build the system’s presence in five key geographic areas in Hampton Roads. In this new position, Hanson will report to Timothy J. Davis, executive vice president of organization effectiveness for BSHSI and also will serve as a member of the health system’s executive management team.

“The opportunities to improve the quality and access to health care services across the state of Virginia and business processes across BSHSI are uniquely made real in this new model of organization. I look forward to actively responding to the call of the mission of Bon Secours to serve in new ways to be good help to the communities BSHSI serves,” stated Richard J. Statuto, BSHSI president and chief executive officer.

The leadership of Bon Secours Hampton Roads will be assumed by Michael Kerner, the current executive vice president/administrator of Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond. Kerner has led the successful expansion and growth of St. Mary’s for half of a decade and has over 25 years of experience in for-profit and not-for-profit health care leadership. Kerner will assume the responsibilities of chief executive officer for Bon Secours Hampton Roads effective August 4th and will lead the day-to-day and long-term strategic operations of BSHSI in the Hampton Roads area. To ensure the continued strength of leadership enjoyed at St. Mary’s Hospital under Michael’s tenure, Bon Secours has appointed Tom Koenig, the current chief operating officer, to work closely with Peter Bernard as a search process for a suitable successor is completed. It is anticipated that a new EVP/Administrator of St Mary’s will be in place within a few months.

Bon Secours Health System, Inc. based in Marriottsville, Maryland, is a $2.4 billion not-for-profit Catholic health system that owns, manages or joint ventures 18 acute care, 5 long term care, 5 assisted living and independent living and other facilities, primarily on the East Coast. Bon Secours Health System consists of more than 16,000 caregivers helping people in seven states. Its vision is to be recognized for its leadership in justice, transforming the communities in which it serves and works into places of health and hope, and being a prophetic voice for systemic U.S. health reform and a more humane world.
